board and batten wall

One way to give a room a quick refresh is to update the walls. Your update could be as simple as a new coat of paint, a new wallpaper, or something a little more involved that adds texture and interest to the room. Like a board and batten wall that will add a chic look to any room. If you’ve never heard of a board-and-batten wall, that’s okay! We’ll go over what it is and how to add it to your home in this easy DIY tutorial.

What is a Board-and-Batten Wall?

A board-and-batten wall is a classic type of paneling that typically only covers the bottom half of a wall. To create a board-and-batten wall, install wide, vertical boards and fasten narrow battens over the gaps.  It’s a simple project to complete, and no matter what type of wall updates you make, it’s always easier if you use an accent wall. Why? Accent walls only require you to change one wall in the room. So, this project will only alter one half of one wall and it won’t take long at all.

How-to Guide

  1. Start by removing the existing baseboard on the wall you’ve chosen.
  2. Replace the old baseboard with the new one using brad nails.
  3. Attach the middle horizontal board along the wall studs. Position it 48 inches from the top of the baseboard.
  4. Decide how much spacing you want between each vertical board. Mark the wall to indicate their placements.
  5. Measure the length for each batten, cut, and then attach the batten using construction adhesive.
  6. Install the top board directly on top of the middle board to create a ledge.
  7. Spackle and caulk all holes and cracks.
  8.  If you don’t have pre-primed boards, prime the wall.
  9. Paint the board and batten wall.
  10. Let the paint dry and enjoy your new board and batten wall!
