You don’t have to fly around the world to see some of the most amazing animals on earth. Since 1892, the Milwaukee County Zoo has gathered creatures from across the globe into one diverse community here in Wisconsin. Now the zoo offers an amazing variety of animals in comfortable habits, and you and your whole family can visit them all year round.
Meet the Locals
The Milwaukee Zoo is home to over 3,100 mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians, and each one has a different personality and story. When you visit, you may see Mira, the little armadillo. Born in early 2018, Mira refused to eat, and had to be raised by hand, a difficult challenge that has rarely succeeded at other zoos. Over a year later, Mira has grown up, and a healthy diet has allowed her shell to toughen up properly. This May, the zoo officially opened its new elephant exhibit, a spacious home for a group of African elephants.
Throughout the zoo, you will see many other creatures from near and far, like the black and white Humboldt penguins of South America. When you arrive at the Bongo habitat, you’ll notice that the large forest antelopes have horns that curve backward to allow easy exploration of thick vegetation. Keep an eye out for the bongo with crossed horns!
Plan Your Visit
The Milwaukee Zoo is located at 10001 West Bluemound Road, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53226. It is open to guests seven days per week, starting at 9 a.m. in the spring and summer, and 9:30 in the fall and winter. If you have a special occasion coming up, you can rent various outdoor and indoor spaces at the zoo. From birthdays to receptions, the zoo can handle the food, service, and other logistics for you.
