With the leaves turning and the first flurries of snow beginning to fall, there’s still some time to enjoy the great outdoors here in Wisconsin. One of our favorite things to do is head out to Amnicon Falls State Park for a hike along some of the most stunning waterfalls and rapids in the state. Amnicon Falls is truly gorgeous, and it doesn’t matter what season it is.
Chasing Waterfalls
The Amnicon River lies along the Douglas Fault, which extends just east of Ashland, Wisconsin to very near Minneapolis-St. Paul. This geological formation created the groundwork – pun very much intended – for the series waterfalls and rapids in the 828-acre park. The fault line separates basalt and sandstone formations in the area. The Upper Falls flow over basalt, while the Lower Falls flow over sandstone. It’s a great place for a day trip as the falls feature a couple of miles of walkable trails. And in the winter, it’s still a great place to visit, though you might have to wear your snowshoes. If you’re in the mood for more than a day trip, there’s good news, as the park – while technically open only from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. – allows overnight camping.
Covered Bridge
The covered bridge that spans the Amnicon River is one of the most picturesque sights in all of Wisconsin. Visitors take lots of pictures here, but there’s also a dedicated “selfie platform” near the river, where you can get your social media on and show everyone the great time you’re having in the park. More adventurous – to say nothing of sure-footed – hikers sometimes head down to the river bank for an up-close look at the rapids and falls. We urge caution if you decide to do that, though! No one wants to end a short hike wet in the cold. Also, for pet lovers: Dogs are welcome in the park, but they must be leashed.
