If you’re eager to cheer on a home team, you don’t have to wait for football season here in Milwaukee. The city’s own USA Club Rugby Men’s Premier West team, the Milwaukee Barbarians, are out on the pitch for the 2021 season, and they have some exciting matches coming up, so keep an eye on their calendar to see what’s happening!
The Year So Far
The Barbarians have booked tournament dates for the days ahead, and they have already come away with some notable achievements this season. Last month, the team brought their A game for the Lion Hunter Sevens competition, and they returned as tournament champions! Sevens is a unique take on the game, in which the typical time durations and team sizes are cut for quicker, even more frenetic play. The traditional rugby match is split with 40-minute halves and 15-player teams, while Sevens scales the action down to seven-minute halves and seven-player teams. This allows for fast tournaments as more competitions can be scheduled per day.
Barbarians’ Background
The modern Barbarians club was formed through the joining of two of Milwaukee’s previously established rugby clubs. In 2012, Milwaukee RFC partnered with the Milwaukee West Side Harlequins RFC to combine their experience and histories into a new venture, and the new formation now competes in USA Rugby Men’s Divisions 1 and 3. If you examine the club’s crest, you can see callbacks to their past and Milwaukee roots, from the French fleur-de-lis to the barley stalks and gear that symbolize the city’s agricultural and industrial history. The cap with bells is a nod to the West Side Harlequins’ old logo, a particularly imposing court jester.
